Smart Grid

The concept of converting sunlight into electricity dates back to 1839, when French physicist Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel discovered that certain materials could generate electricity when exposed to light. This phenomenon, known as the photovoltaic effect, allows us to use far more advanced solar panels. Today, smart grids are an indispensable element for connecting large numbers of solar panels and other forms of renewable energy sources to the power system.

What does the Centre do?

At the Centre for Intelligent Power Grids, we explore the more efficient use of green energy, such as solar and wind energy. Our experts develop new technologies and methods for the intelligent management and distribution of this energy, thus contributing to the sustainable energy of the future. They are committed to daily research to improve ways of using green energy, through the promotion of existing and the development of new algorithms for the optimal management of intelligent grid and microgrid management and their real-time testing.

The results of our research on intelligent power grids can be seen in smart grids that efficiently distribute green energy, in electric vehicles that use renewable energy sources, in-home solar panels that reduce energy consumption from the grid, as well as in smart homes that use technology to optimise electricity consumption.

Centre Head

Prof. Dr Goran Dobrić

Associate Professor at the Department of Electric Power Systems

Goran Dobrić is an Associate Professor at the Department of Electric Power Systems of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade. He graduated from the Energy Department, and completed his doctoral studies in 2016. The Belgrade Chamber of Commerce awarded him for both his PhD thesis, and earlier his master’s thesis, as the best thesis at the University of Belgrade in the relevant academic years. His research includes intelligent power grids and systems, renewable energy sources, as well as equipment monitoring and diagnostics. He is the author of numerous papers published in international journals and a participant in international conferences.
