How do we know that we know?

Have you ever wondered what science actually is? Is it a set of facts we learn at school, a profession practised by engineers, technologists, historians and others – or a continuous process in which we test, question and refine what we think we know? Can we understand science as a kind of human spirituality; what do language and our experience of “being in a body” have to do with it; and is it possible to bring together the technical-scientific and the spiritual-artistic sides of life?

In this lecture, Dr Gordana Medić will gently open the door to the philosophy of science and show how science has evolved: from the first attempts to understand and explain nature, through scientific revolutions that changed our view of the world, all the way to contemporary debates about the limits of scientific knowledge. We will talk about what distinguishes science from pseudoscience, how we can tell that an explanation is “scientific”, but also where the power of science ends when it comes to answering the questions we ask.

This is an opportunity to be reminded, in a playful and inspiring way, that science is above all a human quest to understand the world – and that each of us can join that journey. Come and explore how knowledge is created and how it teaches us to stay curious.
