How a Relatively Old Technology Is Helping Photonics and Artificial Intelligence

The rapid growth in the use of artificial intelligence requires an increase in the number of AI data centres and creates a need for even faster communication between processors within these centres. This is leading to a sharp rise in demand for one critical photonic component — DFB lasers, or distributed feedback lasers.

This lecture will explore why it is not easy to rapidly scale up the production of DFB lasers and what the main challenges are in addressing this problem. At the same time, the audience will be introduced to the basics of projection photolithography — the technology largely responsible for the remarkable progress of electronics and modern technology over the past five decades. The lecture will also discuss how projection photolithography is already supporting the fabrication of DFB lasers, as well as the key challenges in applying this technology.

The lecturer, Dr Stevan Stanković, obtained his PhD from Ghent University in Belgium in the field of DFB lasers. He has many years of experience in both academia and industry, working with projection photolithography in the production of photonic components and integrated circuits based on indium phosphide (InP) and silicon (Si).

Admission to the lecture is free, and registration is not required.
