“Smart” speakers and microphones

Pametni zvucnici i mikrofoni

Have you ever wondered how technology “hears” and “directs” sound? How do virtual assistants in smart buildings “know” where you’re talking to? How can the sound be loud and clear enough at a concert? In this lecture, we enter the world of room acoustics and modern audio systems, crossing the path from concert halls, through conference systems to “smart” multimedia devices.

We’ll talk about it:

Why room acoustics are important (why “the same speaker” doesn’t sound the same in every room),

How engineers model the sound field (software and hardware),

What are “smart” speakers (how systems such as line arrays and sound poles that can “direct” the sound work),

What are “smart” microphones (how to determine the direction of sound and how to extract the desired sound signal from some direction in a noisy environment),

Where all of this is used.

The lecture is intended for anyone interested in technology, physics, mathematics, programming, but also music and sound.
