As part of the accompanying programme of the 21st World Congress of the International Economic Association (IEA), the Palace of Science – Miodrag Kostić Endowment had the honour of hosting Professor Dani Rodrik, one of the most influential contemporary economists in the fields of globalization, international economics, industrial policy and development.

On 25 June, Professor Rodrik gave a lecture titled “The Past, Present and Future of Globalization”, dedicated to the changes currently shaping the global economy. The lecture brought together Congress participants, representatives of the academic community and the professional public, with a focus on the future of globalization, the role of the state, industrial policy, geopolitical challenges, and the relationship between economic development and social stability.

One of the key messages of the lecture was that the world is not necessarily moving towards deglobalization, but towards a different kind of globalization — one that will measure success not only through the growth of trade and national income, but also through economic resilience, green transition, inclusion, employment and the creation of quality jobs.

“Trade, finance and investment are not goals in themselves. They are tools that help us achieve broader social objectives,” Professor Rodrik emphasized.

At a time of growing geopolitical tensions, trade restrictions and the return of industrial policies, Rodrik highlighted the importance of well-considered public policies that do not overlook social cohesion, jobs and the long-term development interests of countries. He particularly emphasized the need to find a new balance between international cooperation and domestic development priorities.

The lecture at the Palace of Science was part of the 21st World Congress of the International Economic Association, which took place in Belgrade from 22 to 26 June 2026 and brought together some of the most prominent names in contemporary economic thought. The Congress was organized by the International Economic Association and the Serbian Association of Economists, with the support of partners and under the patronage of the Government of the Republic of Serbia.

Encounters such as this reaffirm the mission of the Palace of Science – Miodrag Kostić Endowment as a place where knowledge is shared, and where scientific and social dialogue opens space for a better understanding of the future.
