Science Day and Nikola Tesla’s Birthday Celebrated at the Palace of Science with a Tesla Coil Concert

Science Day was celebrated at the Palace of Science – the Endowment of Miodrag Kostić. This date has been officially observed in Serbia since 2015, on the birthday of Nikola Tesla, one of the most significant scientists in history. The day is dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of science and bringing it closer to the general public, with Tesla, as a symbol of innovation and creativity, playing a central role in the celebration.

As part of the program, a performance titled "Concert for Two Hands and Two Coils" was held by Maja Bosnić, composer and assistant professor at the Department of Composition at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade. The concert took place in the former Counter Hall of the Palace of Science, using a Tesla coil – a device that generates powerful electric sparks resembling lightning and is used for educational and demonstration purposes. Tesla developed this coil in the late 19th century as part of his research on high-frequency, high-voltage currents.

More than just a significant scientific exhibit, the coil served as a unique musical instrument, producing distinctive high-voltage sounds. The crackling of electrical discharges, the rhythm of the sparks, and specific tones were woven into the composition itself, making the performance truly one-of-a-kind.

Visitors had the opportunity to enjoy interpretations of some of the world’s most famous musical works presented in a truly unique and unconventional way through this device, while also being invited to actively participate in the creation of sound.
