Young Astronomers from Serbia Win Five Medals at the Olympiad in Mumbai

At the 18th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics, held from August 11 to 21, 2025, in Mumbai, students from Serbia achieved outstanding success by winning two silver and three bronze medals, while also securing third place in the competition for the best poster. The Serbian team participated in the IOAA with five students and two team leaders, as one of a total of 63 teams from around the world – the largest number of participants in the history of this Olympiad.

Before the competition, the young astronomers went through 15 hours of intensive training in the Planetarium of the Palace of Science, which significantly contributed to their success, with the expert support of Branko Simonović, a well-known popularizer of astronomy.

The silver and bronze medals were won by Mihailo Radovanović, Pavle Ignjatović, and Jovan Kulezić from the Mathematical Grammar School in Belgrade, Neda Živanović from “Svetozar Marković” Grammar School in Niš, and Dušan Lazić from the Grammar School in Kraljevo.

The Serbian team was led by Dr. Milan Stojanović from the Astronomical Observatory in Belgrade and Dr. Stanislav Milošević from the Department of Astronomy at the Faculty of Mathematics, University of Belgrade.

The Serbian team’s participation in the competition in India was made possible by the Ministry of Education, with the support of the Astronomical Society of Serbia.
