More than a Game

September 2025 - June 2026

Thanks to the exhibition More than a Game, we will discover how video games have evolved from simple arcade entertainment—something you will also be able to experience firsthand by playing Space Invaders on an original arcade machine—into one of the most important cultural and social phenomena of our time. You will explore titles that, while fun, were not created solely for amusement. More than a Game will be the place where, instead of buying skins and creating virtual avatars, you can use AI technology to design your unique gaming portrait and discover what you would look like in your favorite video game.

Although discussions about video games often focus on negative aspects such as wasted time, violence, addiction, or social isolation, we often forget that video games are more than just play. They have not only followed technological and social changes but have also driven them. The demand for more powerful graphic cards and faster processors, new communication channels and models, as well as innovative narratives, has launched entire industries and continues to shape how we learn, research, and experience the world around us.

Through carefully selected games, stories, and interactive content, you will discover how games have become the invisible infrastructure of modern society. You will explore titles that, while entertaining, were not created just for fun. You will learn how surgeons prepare for operations by playing video games, which games are used for collecting data and researching dementia, and which ones help cancer patients build resilience.

The exhibition will offer all visitors the chance to see how selected games can influence social change, raise ecological awareness, or serve as platforms for developing digital literacy. In the final section of the exhibition, you will learn to recognize the mechanics of video games that drive nearly every app on your phone. With the help of a specially designed application, you will also learn how to gamify everyday activities and discover how patterns from video games can become your allies and tools for learning, personal development, and better organization.

If you want to explore the journey from the golden age of video games and home consoles to today’s games and applications, don’t miss More than a Game, realized thanks to the partnership between the Palace of Science and the organization Play.

How did Atari turn table tennis into a global hit?

When Atari launched Pong in 1972—a simple 2D simulation of table tennis—the game became one of the first global gaming hits! Despite its straightforward gameplay, it won over audiences of all ages, and original arcade machines are now preserved in museums around the world.
