September is a month when we celebrate cultural heritage and reflect on what we have inherited—and what we will leave to future generations. To mark the occasion, the Palace of Science invites you to take part in a different kind of investigation: one that follows the traces we leave behind every day, often without even noticing.
To better understand the relationship between people, culture and the environment, we will borrow the methods and perspective of archaeology—a discipline that knows how to uncover stories of human life hidden in material remains. But this time, we will not be digging into the distant past. We will explore our own everyday lives!
What do the traces of contemporary life reveal about us? What habits, values and patterns of behaviour might future researchers discover in them? Just like archaeologists carefully uncover and interpret fragments of past civilisations, workshop participants will examine the “archaeological remains” of a contemporary urban family.
Through teamwork and lively discussion, and with support from the Neozoik Foundation, we will explore how our lifestyles shape the heritage we leave behind. The workshop offers an engaging, interactive introduction to the basic principles and methods of archaeological research, while encouraging participants to consider the traces they themselves are leaving for the future. After all, to understand the culture we are creating today, sometimes all we need to do is look at what we throw away.
The workshop is designed for children aged 7 to 12 and is limited to 20 participants.
