In the month when we turn our attention to the bacteria, fungi and viruses that make up our microbiome, the Palace of Science is also presenting the board game MICROPOLIS.
Set in a post-apocalyptic world where there is no trace of the life forms we know today, the game is an engaging blend of science, strategy and fun. It was developed as part of a science popularisation project, with the support of the Center for the Promotion of Science.
The story, game mechanics and visual identity of MICROPOLIS were developed together with pupils, students, teachers and researchers from Belgrade, Niš and Kragujevac, who combined their knowledge and creativity to create a game that shows how every game mechanic can be rooted in a real biological concept.
By playing MICROPOLIS, we will discover how bacteria survive extreme conditions and how evolution is a game of cooperation, competition and adaptation. Through this engaging game, we will learn that bacteria are not only causes of disease, but also highly adaptable organisms that, thanks to complex survival strategies, can persist in a wide range of environments.
Each player in this strategy game begins as one of seven bacterial colonies. As leaders of different colonies, players conquer new environments, develop special traits, face disasters and fight for survival. As they play and progress through this exciting game, they will encounter real biological processes and scientific concepts such as horizontal gene transfer, the CRISPR-Cas system, selective pressure and recombination.
Join us in MICROPOLIS, survive the apocalypse, form the most successful bacterial colony and become the ancestor of new life on Earth.
Admission is free, but the number of places is limited. Applications for participation are available via the link.
