Raman Spectrometry

On Friday, 17 April 2026, as part of the activities of the VINARH Centre, a workshop on the application of Raman spectrometry in modern archaeometry will be held. The workshop will be delivered by associates of the VINARH Centre with the support of Prof. Dr. Theodore Ganetsos from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of West Attica.

Professor Ganetsos will introduce us to the basics of Raman spectrometry, its potential applications in archaeometric research, and provide practical examples. After the theoretical introduction (Hall “Reč”, Palace of Science, starting at 15:00), a practical session with a portable Raman spectrometer will follow. The exercise will take place at the Centre for Automation and Signal Processing, Palace of Science, 4th floor, starting at 15:45. The workshop is intended for archaeometry professionals, students, and all other interested participants.

Prof. Dr. Theodore Ganetsos graduated from the Department of Physics in 1989 at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He completed his Master’s studies in nanomaterials in 1993 at the Demokritos Research Center. He obtained his PhD in 2001 from the Institute of Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research, Dresden University of Technology, Germany. He completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in 2019, awarded by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, under the Coulson Cross Fellowship. He is currently Director of the Laboratory for Non-Destructive Techniques at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of West Attica. He has published more than 120 scientific papers in journals and presented at 154 international and Greek scientific conferences, which have been cited 1,598 times.
